Deep dive

Classical food therapy, in plain words.

Every figure below comes from the app itself. The pictures are crops of real app screens; only the wheel at the top of this page is an illustration.

01 — Today 今日

Four foods a day, chosen for you.

Today opens with the TCM season, a line of daily wisdom and four foods picked for the season and, once you've taken the quiz, for your body type. Each pick says why it was chosen, and a food your type should limit is never picked. The balance bar shows where your type sits between cold and hot.

The Yin-Yang balance bar from Yin 阴 to Yang 阳 with the marker on the cold side, and Today's Recommendations: prawns and cinnamon bark, each with a line on how it supports the Yang Deficient type
In the app · Today, autumn, Yang Deficient
02 — Foods 食物

1,188 foods, read the classical way.

Each card gives a food's thermal nature, flavour, element and the organ meridians it is said to enter, what it is traditionally used for and its cautions, with the Chinese name and pinyin. Search in any of the three; pinyin works without tone marks. Save or share a food straight from its card.

The walnut card: 核桃 hétao, Warm and Water tags, “Your type · Yang Deficient”, Saved and Share buttons, then Flavor: sweet, Organ affinity: kidney, lung, large intestine, and the card's “Therapeutic Properties” in TCM terms
In the app · Walnut, saved, marked for your type
The pear card: 梨 lí, Cool and Metal tags and a red “Limit for your type · Yang Deficient” badge above Save and Share
In the app · Pear, a food to limit for this type
03 — Constitution 体质

Twenty questions, nine body types.

The quiz asks about things you can notice, like how cold your feet are in bed or how you feel on a humid day, instead of TCM jargon. It places you in one of nine TCM constitution types and lists the foods to favour and to limit. It is a wellness self-check, not a diagnosis.

The quiz result Yang Deficient 阳虚质 Yáng Xū Zhì: a description of the type, dietary guidance, green Foods to Emphasize chips such as lamb, fresh ginger, walnut and chestnut, and red Foods to Avoid chips such as watermelon, crab and banana
In the app · Result: Yang Deficient
04 — Symptoms 症状

Look up how you feel.

84 conditions, from bloating to a dry cough or cold hands and feet, each with its TCM perspective and the foods traditionally used for it. Search in English, Chinese or pinyin. Serious conditions, such as pneumonia, tell you to see a healthcare provider first.

Cold Hands and Feet 手足冰冷: the TCM perspective “Yang deficiency or poor circulation” and the first foods traditionally used for it: dried ginger, cinnamon bark and chili pepper, each marked hot
In the app · Cold Hands and Feet
Pneumonia 肺炎: its TCM perspective and a red notice: see a healthcare provider, pneumonia can be serious and needs proper diagnosis and care; the foods listed are traditional supportive foods, not a treatment
In the app · A serious condition
05 — Elements · Seasons 五行 · 四季

Five Elements, five seasons.

Tap an element on the Wu Xing diagram to see its organs, season, flavour, colour, emotion, sense organ and climate, and the elements it feeds and restrains. The Seasons tab follows the Chinese solar calendar, with Late Summer as a fifth season, and gives each one foods to eat and to avoid, a classic dish and tips.

The Autumn card marked Now, Qiū, Sep 23 to Nov 6, Metal element, with a quote about moistening the lung and nineteen Foods to Eat chips such as Asian pear, snow fungus, lotus root and lily bulb
In the app · Autumn, now
The Five Elements diagram: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water around a pentagon, with Metal selected, and a legend for Generation 相生 and Control 相克
In the app · Five Elements, Metal selected

  3. Look it up, keep it

Search any food or symptom in English, Chinese or pinyin. Save foods with the heart and share your list.

FAQ

Questions.

When can I get YinYang Food?

It isn't in the stores yet. YinYang Food is coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. Leave your email in the sign-up below to hear when it launches.

How much does it cost?

The price will be announced at launch. There's no subscription, no ads and no in-app purchases.

Is YinYang Food medical advice?

No. It's an educational reference to traditional Chinese food therapy, drawn from classical texts. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and the constitution quiz is a wellness self-check, not a diagnosis. Talk to a qualified healthcare provider before changing your diet, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication, have allergies or are managing a health condition.

Do I need to take the quiz?

No. Without a result, Today picks foods for the season. With one, the picks also suit your body type, and food cards are marked “✦ Your type” or “Limit for your type”. You can retake the quiz or clear your result at any time.

Does it work offline?

Yes. All 1,188 foods, the symptoms, the seasons and the quotes are stored in the app. The only thing that goes over the internet is the optional newsletter sign-up.

What does the app know about me?

The app keeps your favourites and your latest quiz result on your phone and never sends them to us. There's no account, no analytics and no ads. If you join the newsletter, your email address is sent to LD Coda's sign-up service. See the privacy policy.

Can I search in Chinese or pinyin?

Yes. Search foods and symptoms in English, Chinese characters or pinyin. Tone marks are optional, so “xigua” finds watermelon (西瓜) and “fuzhang” finds bloating (腹胀).

Can I share foods with someone?

Yes. Share any food from its card, or your whole favourites list, through your phone's share sheet. Where sharing isn't available, the app copies the text instead.

Where does the information come from?

The food classifications follow traditional Chinese food therapy as set out in the classical texts, and each of the app's 167 quotes names its source, most often the Huangdi Neijing (黄帝内经).

Not medical advice. YinYang Food is an educational and wellness reference to traditional Chinese food therapy, drawn from classical texts. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Talk to a qualified healthcare provider before changing your diet. Terms of use
